FAQ
Q: What does the ‘0’ mean in 0Stella mean?
A: The zero stands for Zero Waste living. It also represents the point of intersection of the X and Y axis. I stand for comm-unity, not division.
Q: Where is the end goal for the cycling tour?
A: Edmonton, Alberta. I began in Victoria, British Columbia. Cycled to Blairmore Alberta. Flew to Dublin and will spend the winter cycling across mainland Europe. I will fly into Newfoundland in the spring of 2024 and cycle west towards my home in Edmonton. I expect to be finished by the end of September 2024.
Q: What is the goal of this tour?
A: To innovate a new, more sustainable and community-focused mode of album touring. To write a new album inspired by the Canadian landscape and all the Canadians I met on tour in 2022.
Q: How did you come up with the Who Needs This Tour idea?
A: In the first two years of the 0Stella project, as an emerging artist, I had to fly across Canada to tour and showcase. By summer 2020 I was watching an Instagram Live by Glen Hansard who was remarking on the clean skies due to reduced air travel and how it had inspired him to reorganise his world touring schedule to have fewer transatlantic flights. Since my name stands for sustainability I felt I could do a better job to advocate for it. I was invited to France for an artist residency commencing autumn 2022, so I took the opportunity to limit myself to only one transatlantic flight and do the rest of the travel using a sprinter van converted into a mobile stage, cycling and public transit. When the residency and all the other modes of transport fell through due to the pandemic, I decided to commit to doing the 2022 There Is N0 0ther Tour to promote my album, Freefall, with just my bicycle. I would travel only across Canada, to bring music to people while committing to the Zero Waste living. As Freefall was the first of two mini albums that make up a larger album called Pendulum State (out 2024), the logical thing to do was promote its sister album, Skyward, in the same way, except this time I would add on Europe. The 2023 Who Needs This Tour is just that - an offer to anyone who needs a little uplifting along my journey.
Q: When does this tour start and where?
A: On 7th May 2023 in Victoria, BC.
Q: What do you need to embark on a bicycle tour as a musician?
A: I have a hybrid bike-packing bike that I purchased from Revolution Cycle in Edmonton, Alberta. The one-wheel Bob trailer that attaches to the back of my bike has been modified with an extra rack on the top to accommodate my guitar.
Q: How can people support your journey?
A: Free ways: you can follow me on your favourite streaming service or Bandcamp. From there you can play and share my music which is also really valuable to an independent artist. Or snap a picture of me and tag me on your socials! @0stellamusic
Visit my Crowdfundr where you can buy me a meal, help with repairs or donate for a night in an AirBnB. There are also pre-sale tiers available for vinyl or personal 0Stella shows and custom-written songs for fans who want to support in a bigger way.
Schools and small businesses like camping and bike shops can also book me for concerts or workshops by emailing whoneedsthistour@gmail.com .
Q: How do you get power for things when you’re not cycling?
A: I use solar panels on days off. I hang my LightSaver Max panel in front of the top of my tent. That combined with the power collected while I’m riding from my PedalCell allows me to recharge my devices including my USB rechargeable guitar.
Q: Are there dates for the Who Needs This Tour?
A: This tour is a hybrid of last year's. Traditional venues are challenging to book with a completely unpredictable cycling schedule in territories I'm unfamiliar with. I will be doing pop-up shows in major cities when I arrive and all of my mailing list subscribers are notified before the public, allowing them the first chance to book me for a house concert. I will have shows in traditional venues in territories I'm returning to: Canada and Ireland mainly, and some on mainland Europe.
